FAQ

Will my flowers look exactly as pictured?

All images are examples of what is possible, & we can work in a particular direction, although nothing we make will ever be the same twice. We visit farmers multiple times a week and always choose the freshest and most interesting materials; the flowering seasons will vary according to the weather each year. On any given week we have a unique & eclectic curated mix of locally grown & harvested botanical materials in the studio.

Why are we unable to guarantee certain flowers?

At HS we ONLY work with locally farmed and foraged botanical materials, highlighting & responding to the beauty of the seasons and the abundant agriculture & natural landscapes around us (MANY makers & florists source materials from local wholesalers, without the product being locally grown; those materials are flown across the country or the world with a massive carbon footprint, are not kept in water & are sprayed with chemicals, they are also therefore grown for longevity, rather than scent or interest, often in developing countries with undesirable labour & environmental practices). We source from local growers multiple times a week and flowering seasons vary greatly; we are never sure exactly what will be looking amazing until the day, and it is our job to curate the best possible mix of materials to create artistic & meaningful outcomes with, across multiple types of flowers, foliage and foragings, from multiple local locations.

Why are dried flower responses more expensive than fresh?

Our dried botanical offerings are around 20% more valuable than fresh responses, due to the extra labour involved at all stages (drying, storing, transporting &/or working with more fragile materials), plus we need to use more materials for the required volume of our offering (as materials shrink a little on drying). The benefit of dried materials is obviously that you can keep the response for a longer period, maybe just refreshing seasonally or annually (a little or a lot), depending on the situation/ environment. All our dried materials are SA grown (often from the Willunga Basin/ Southern Vales/ Fleurieu Peninsula) & dried by us in-house without the use of chemicals, preservatives, bleaches or dyes.

What is our vision?

Our creations are grounded in the intention of reconnecting people with the beauty & wonders of the natural world (& serving your needs as our client, in a way beyond what you imagined). From thoughtful gestures to large-scale immersive environments, we have a scale of response suited to your context & intention. And we love to visualize & curate the best possible outcome for your brief…on a given day. Allow us to rewild & re-enchant your moments, places & experiences…creating utterly individual garden-like sculptural forms & landscape-like immersions, with over 30 years experience in the visual arts, floristry & events.

Why don’t we copy other people’s work?

We are visual artists with many years of conceptual & technical training & it is our job (& in your best interest) to create something totally individual every time, inspired by the local (& environmentally responsible) materials we have access to on the day, & directed by “the feel” of your intention & any brief/requirements/logistics/constraints. We are specialised in designing artistic solutions for you that are beyond what you may have seen before & could possibly imagine. This practice, working sculpturally & spatially, is what we LOVE to do…& are highly skilled in. We never repeat even our own work, although you can certainly be inspired by certain directions!

Why do we care about creating a visual language of “here”, of this place?

Harvest Studio is committed to creating and strengthening a local visual botanical language, that speaks “of here”, fostering relationships between locals, visitors, growers, artists and the environment. Our work is all about connection between people, place and the natural seasonal landscape around us. With 8 generations of family connection to the Willunga Basin and our State Heritage Site, we want to contribute to the flourishing (beyond sustainable) expression of local culture.

How sustainable are we?

We are a holistic studio that adheres to 4th pillar sustainability principles in all we do for a flourishing local environment, economy, community & culture. We are working towards a zero carbon footprint (supported by our project to replant the cemetery/studio grounds) & are engaged locally with Lot 50-Kanyanyapilla on a bi-cultural regeneration project.
